The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has dismissed allegations made by U.S.-based short-seller Hindenburg Research against the Adani Group. SEBI concluded that there was no evidence of stock manipulation or related-party fund routing, giving a major relief to the business conglomerate and investors.
The controversy began when Hindenburg Research published a report in 2023 claiming that the Adani Group had engaged in financial misconduct, including stock price manipulation and funneling funds through related-party companies. The report led to a significant drop in Adani Group stocks, wiping out billions of dollars in market value and raising concerns among investors.
After a thorough investigation, SEBI issued its final order on September 18, 2025, stating that the transactions under scrutiny did not qualify as related-party transactions that violated regulatory norms. The regulator also found no evidence of market manipulation. SEBI’s findings effectively cleared the Adani Group of the allegations raised by Hindenburg Research.
Following the SEBI ruling, Adani Group stocks saw a sharp recovery. Adani Total Gas led the rally with an 8.4% increase, Adani Power rose by 7.4%, and Adani Enterprises gained 4.2%. Despite this surge, some group companies remain below their pre-Hindenburg report levels. For instance, Adani Enterprises is still around 28% lower than its peak, while other group firms are down between 20% to 80%.
The Adani Group welcomed the decision, calling it a “resounding victory” and criticized the damage caused to investors due to the earlier allegations. Analysts say that SEBI’s verdict is likely to restore investor confidence and improve market sentiment toward Adani stocks.
While SEBI’s ruling addresses the Hindenburg allegations, the Adani Group continues to face separate legal challenges internationally. In the United States, the company is reportedly facing criminal charges over an alleged bribery scheme, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is pursuing a civil case.
Financial experts view SEBI’s clean chit as a significant endorsement of the Adani Group’s corporate governance and regulatory compliance. The decision also highlights the importance of accurate reporting and careful analysis before drawing conclusions that can influence public opinion and market stability.
This regulatory vindication provides relief to investors and demonstrates the robustness of India’s financial oversight mechanisms. SEBI’s investigation ensures that market practices remain transparent while protecting investors from misleading allegations. The Adani Group’s stock recovery is expected to continue gradually as confidence returns to India’s capital markets.
