The journey from stadiums and racetracks to film sets is hardly unprecedented. Over the decades, several accomplished sportspersons have stepped into the world of acting, some as a second career and others while still competing at the highest level. A few went on to become stars in their new profession, proving that charisma can thrive as much under arc lights as under floodlights. Others enjoyed only fleeting success before returning to the arena where they truly belonged.
Their stories are as varied as the sports they represent. Here is a look at some of the most notable personalities from the Indian subcontinent, followed by remarkable international examples, who successfully bridged the worlds of sport and screen.
Ajith Kumar:
One of India’s biggest stars, who is now pursuing an international racing career. Leaving his film career at its peak, after creating a massive fandom for himself in the South, only to follow his childhood dream can be one of the most passionate things any person can do.

The actor-turned-racer, Ajith Kumar, carries a deep love and passion for racing cars and bikes. Despite undergoing an operation at the beginning of his acting career due to an accident caused by bike racing, doctors warned him not to race. But his love for racing made him never quit.
Over the decades, he has transitioned from bike racing to open-wheel cars, competing in prestigious events like the Dubai 24H and the European Formula Two Championship. He founded his own team, Ajith Kumar Racing, to represent India on the global motorsport stage.
Rahul Bose:
A man who successfully balanced his acting life with his sports career, Rahul Bose. Rahul Bose started his acting career at the age of six and has a very impressive film record. Along with acting, Bose has also worked as a writer, director, producer, playback singer, and stage performer.

At a very young age, Rahul Bose took an interest in sports after his mother introduced him to boxing and rugby. He also played cricket and was coached by former India cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Rahul Bose represented India in international rugby for 11 years (1998–2009). A versatile athlete since youth, he played for the national team and went on to serve as the President of Rugby India.
Randeep Hooda:
Randeep Hooda is a popular, well-known actor in the Hindi film industry. He found mainstream recognition with gritty films like D (2005) and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai (2010). The year 2010 marked a significant turning point in Hooda’s career.

He participated in swimming and equestrian sports and won medals at the national level during his school years in Haryana. He has won multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals in national dressage and show-jumping tournaments, often riding his own rescued horses.
Beyond competing, his sports background has heavily influenced his acting career. Hooda often relies on the discipline and fitness built through sports to manage intense physical transformations for his films.
Sandeep Patil:
Former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil surprised fans by stepping into Bollywood after India’s historic 1983 World Cup win. At the peak of his cricket career, he became one of the few cricketers to take on a full-fledged lead role in a Hindi film.

Patil made his acting debut with Kabhi Ajnabi The (1985), playing the lead opposite Poonam Dhillon and Debashree Roy. The film also featured Syed Kirmani as the villain and a brief cameo by a young Sachin Tendulkar.
Known for his aggressive batting, Patil scored 1,588 Test runs and 1,005 ODI runs for India. He famously hit Bob Willis for six fours in an over during the 1982 Manchester Test. After retirement, he coached India A, guided Kenya to the 2003 World Cup semi-finals, and later served as the Chairman of the BCCI Selection Committee.
Mohsin Khan:
Mohsin Hasan Khan is a former Pakistani international cricketer, national coach, and Bollywood actor who played as an elegant opening batsman between 1977 and 1986. He is widely remembered as the first Pakistani batsman to score a Test double-century at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Beyond cricket, he made significant headlines by marrying Indian actress Reena Roy and transitioning into a Bollywood acting career.

After retiring from cricket early, he moved to India and entered Bollywood. He made his acting debut in the movie Batwara (1989), for which he was nominated for a Filmfare Award. His most famous role was as the main hero in Mahesh Bhatt’s hit crime-drama movie Saathi (1991). He acted in over 10 Hindi films before moving back to Pakistan, where he also worked in the Pakistani film industry (Lollywood).
Saiyami Kher:
Saiyami Kher is an Indian actress who primarily works in Hindi and Telugu films. Saiyami comes from a prominent film and sports background. The actress gained recognition for her performance in the movie Mirzya.

Saiyami has balanced a career in cinema with her passion for athletics. In 2025, she was named the official ambassador for Ironman India, becoming the face of the event after completing the grueling Ironman 70.3 triathlon twice in less than a year.
