Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s food safety crackdown has once again grabbed attention, but this time it wasn’t just because of the inspections. A Mumbai woman’s post on X (formerly Twitter) praising Mundhe’s strict action against unhygienic food practices has gone viral, only for the internet to zoom in on something entirely different, a McDonald’s wrapper.
The woman shared a picture of food bought from a street vendor and praised Mundhe for bringing visible changes in the way vendors package food. She wrote that instead of wrapping food in old newspapers or reused paper, vendors had started using cleaner food-grade wrapping, calling it a positive impact of the FDA’s ongoing inspections.
While many users appreciated the commissioner for pushing better hygiene standards, others seemed to have different priorities. Eagle-eyed social media users quickly claimed that the wrapper in the picture resembled one used by McDonald’s in the United States.
And just like that, the conversation took a detour. Instead of discussing food safety, users started asking the million-dollar question: How did a US McDonald’s wrapper reach a Mumbai street vendor?
The comments section was flooded with guesses, jokes and theories. Some suggested a traveller might have brought it back from abroad, while others wondered if it had somehow found its way into the local recycling chain. A few even joked that the wrapper had travelled more than most people.
There has been no official clarification on where the wrapper came from, but the unexpected detail ended up stealing the spotlight from the woman’s original message.
The viral post comes as the Maharashtra FDA continues one of its biggest food safety enforcement drives under Tukaram Mundhe, carrying out inspections across the state and taking action against establishments found violating food safety norms. While the crackdown aims to improve hygiene standards, the internet, as always, found its own headline.
