A fashion show held in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, has triggered massive public outrage. The event, organised at the popular tourist destination, coincided with the holy month of Ramadan, leading to sharp criticism from religious leaders, social activists, and local residents. The controversy erupted after videos of the show, featuring models walking the ramp in revealing attire against the snow-clad backdrop, went viral on social media.
Many have condemned the event as ‘obscene’ and ‘culturally insensitive’. Critics argue that hosting such an event during Ramadan, a month of fasting and spiritual reflection, is deeply disrespectful to local sentiments.
Prominent religious leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq strongly criticised the event, stating that it goes against Kashmir’s Sufi traditions and Islamic values. “This kind of vulgar display has no place in our society, especially during Ramadan,” he said.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chairman, All Parties Hurriyat Conference, wrote, “Outrageous! That In the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in #Gulmarg, pictures & videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the valley known for its sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir.!”
The state’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, replied to it from his official account ensuring action. Abdullah wrote, “The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities & I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report.”
Ahmed Wani, General Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Nationalist People’s Front, and Editor, The Heaven Mail, wrote on X, “Great job, @jktdcofficial & #GDA… A naked fashion show in Gulmarg during Ramadan—half-dressed folks prancing in snow. What’s next, bikinis at prayers? Explain this value-free circus.”
Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat also slammed the authorities for allowing the event to take place. He questioned the tourism department’s role in permitting such a programme in a region known for its conservative social fabric. “It is shocking that such an event was sanctioned without considering local sensitivities,” he remarked.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded to the public backlash, acknowledging the anger and concern. Taking to social media, he assured that his government was taking the matter seriously and demanded a full report within 24 hours.
“We have taken note of the concerns raised regarding the Gulmarg fashion show. A detailed report has been sought, and appropriate action will be taken,” Abdullah stated.
According to officials, the show was reportedly part of efforts to promote tourism in the region. However, the decision to hold it during Ramadan has backfired, with many calling it a blatant disregard for Kashmiri culture and traditions.
The event was reportedly held alongside the Khelo India Winter Games, a government-backed initiative to boost winter sports and tourism in Gulmarg. While the games were widely welcomed, the fashion show has drawn unwanted attention. Critics argue that there are better ways to showcase Kashmiri culture and attract visitors without offending religious sentiments.
Several political and religious groups have called for strict action against those responsible for organising the event. Social media has been flooded with demands for accountability, with hashtags like #BoycottGulmargShow trending online.
Many Kashmiris are urging the government to ensure that such culturally insensitive incidents do not happen again. “Tourism should be promoted in a way that respects the traditions of the place. This event was an insult,” said a local resident.
Following the uproar, government sources have assured that necessary steps will be taken after reviewing the report. Officials have hinted that disciplinary action may be taken against those who approved the event.
The Gulmarg fashion show controversy has reignited the debate on balancing tourism promotion with respect for local values. As authorities prepare to take action, the incident has left a lasting mark on public discourse in Kashmir.
