Global Innovators Join Forces for Smart Mobility
The Sustainable Cities Challenge (SCC) has brought together 10 global innovators to tackle Varanasi’s growing crowd management issues. Organised by the Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), the Innovator Academy aims to develop data-driven solutions for mobility in the old city of Kashi.

The challenge, worth $9 million, is a collaboration between Varanasi Municipal Corporation, Varanasi Smart City, Challenge Works, and the World Resources Institute (WRI). With millions of visitors flocking to Varanasi each year, the city faces severe congestion, making efficient crowd management essential for residents, tourists, and local businesses.
Crowd-Mapping: A Step Towards Smart Mobility
One of the key highlights of the workshop was a crowd-mapping session, led by Varanasi’s municipal commissioner. The workshop featured insights from a crowding survey conducted by WRI India and The Urban Lab, showcased through an interactive exhibition.
The exhibit demonstrated how real-time crowding data can improve mobility planning, make public spaces more accessible, and enhance pedestrian experiences.
Officials and Experts Push for Innovation
The event saw participation from top city officials, urban planners, and transport experts. Discussions focused on how data and technology could transform Varanasi’s mobility landscape.
A representative from TMF highlighted that while Varanasi is steeped in history, its growing number of visitors brings modern-day transport challenges. The SCC Innovator Academy aims to show how human-centric data solutions can make mobility more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable.
Experts from Challenge Works and WRI India echoed this sentiment, emphasising that urban mobility solutions must blend technology with real-world experiences. The goal is to turn mobility challenges into opportunities for a smarter urban future.
A Collaborative Step Forward
The Innovator Academy provided a platform for experts and city leaders to exchange ideas on scalable solutions for urban crowding. The workshop reinforced the importance of data-driven innovations in shaping the future of urban mobility in Varanasi and beyond.
