Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a series of Indian airstrikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The military offensive, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” came in response to a recent militant attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, including one foreign national.
India Strikes Back
In the early hours of 7 May 2025, the Indian Air Force executed precision strikes on nine locations believed to harbour terrorists linked to groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. These targets were located in areas including Muzaffarabad, Kotli, and Bahawalpur.
Indian officials described the operation as “focused and non-escalatory,” emphasising that no Pakistani military installations were targeted and that every effort was made to avoid civilian casualties.
Pakistan Reacts with Fury
In a national address, Pakistan’s Prime Minister vowed retaliation, stating that the country would avenge the deaths of its citizens. Military officials claimed several Indian aircraft were downed during the strikes—an assertion strongly denied by India.
The Pakistani government has labelled the airstrikes as a violation of sovereignty and has placed its armed forces on high alert. Emergency meetings were held to assess next steps, while the National Security Committee approved corresponding military actions.
Civilian Impact and Damage
According to reports from Pakistan-administered regions, at least 31 people were killed and over 45 injured in the strikes. Indian officials maintain that the attacks were strictly focused on eliminating terror launch pads, not civilians.
Local residents in the targeted areas reported loud explosions around 3:30 am, with some structures severely damaged.
Global Community Calls for Restraint
International reactions have called for de-escalation. The United Nations, United States, China, and the European Union have urged both countries to exercise maximum restraint and pursue dialogue over conflict.
Air travel in the region has been heavily disrupted, with commercial flights rerouted or suspended due to heightened security risks.
Increased Military Readiness
Along the Line of Control, both countries have ramped up military presence. Cross-border shelling has been reported from several sectors, with additional casualties feared. Civil defence alerts have been issued in parts of Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Authorities have placed Srinagar Airport on high alert and activated air defence systems in northern zones.
The situation remains extremely fragile. As both nations maintain strong postures, the risk of further escalation looms large. Diplomatic efforts are underway behind the scenes, but tensions on the ground continue to rise. The next few days will be critical in determining whether this latest confrontation spirals into a wider conflict or leads to renewed dialogue.
