From September 22, 2025, Indian families will feel a lighter load on their monthly expenses. The government’s new GST rates, announced earlier this month, mean many everyday goods are now cheaper. For the middle class, this brings some much-needed relief.
Food on the table, at lower prices
Basic food items are among the biggest winners. Paneer, UHT milk, butter, cheese, jams, and ghee have all become cheaper. For example, Amul and Mother Dairy cut the price of a 200gm paneer pack from Rs 95 to Rs 92. A litre of Amul Milk Gold is now Rs 80, down from Rs 83. Even indulgences like Pringles chips are 12 per cent cheaper. Ice creams too cost less, with a Mother Dairy butterscotch cone now Rs 30 instead of Rs 35.
Daily essentials get affordable
Middle-class households also spend heavily on personal care. Shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, and hair oils have shifted to the 5 per cent GST slab from 18 per cent. Brands like L’Oréal, Dove, Close-Up, and Himalaya have promised 11 to 13 per cent lower prices. This means routine shopping trips will cost noticeably less.
Savings beyond the kitchen
The reforms are not just about food and toiletries. Cement, used widely in home building and repairs, has seen GST reduced from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. With major producers passing on benefits, home construction and renovation will become more affordable.
More room in the family budget
Economists say these cuts will help families manage inflation and even set aside savings. Bank of Baroda noted that lower GST “creates more space for households to spend or save,” which may boost demand across the economy.
Will all companies pass on benefits?
The government has asked companies to ensure the savings reach consumers. Finance Ministry teams will track price changes monthly to avoid businesses pocketing the cuts. Early signs show many brands have already reduced prices, though smaller shops may take time to adjust.
A festival for middle-class homes
Prime Minister Modi called this rollout a “GST savings festival.” For India’s middle class, it means cheaper food, lower grooming costs, and more affordable homes. It may not solve every financial worry, but it puts a little more breathing space into everyday budgets.
