Actor Rani Mukerji has been felicitated with the Excellence in Women Empowerment Through Cinema Award for her enduring contribution to portraying strong and progressive women on screen. The honour was presented as part of a special Christmas initiative titled ‘Supergirls of Tomorrow’, launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in collaboration with The Bhamla Foundation, led by social activist Asif Bhamla.
The campaign focuses on empowering and educating the girl child across India, using cinema, awareness, and social outreach as tools for change. Rani Mukerji’s work was recognised for consistently reinforcing values of dignity, equality, and resilience through impactful storytelling.
Marking 30 years in the Indian film industry, Mukerji remains one of the most influential figures in Hindi cinema. Over the decades, she has built a body of work that has challenged stereotypes and redefined female representation on screen. From hard-hitting dramas to mainstream entertainers, her roles have often placed women at the centre of powerful narratives.
Her recent National Award-winning performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway further strengthened her reputation as an actor who fearlessly takes on socially relevant stories. Widely regarded as a reflection of the modern Indian woman, Mukerji has portrayed characters that are independent, determined, and morally courageous.
Her filmography includes acclaimed titles such as Black, No One Killed Jessica, Hichki, Yuva, Veer-Zaara, Hum Tum, Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, and the popular Mardaani franchise. Through these films, she has helped shift societal perceptions by presenting women as decision-makers and change agents rather than passive figures.
Accepting the award, Mukerji emphasised the importance of initiatives that focus on young girls, stating that empowering them is essential to building a more compassionate and equal society. She highlighted cinema’s ability to influence public thought and reaffirmed her commitment to telling stories that celebrate women as leaders and nation builders.
Mukerji will next reprise her role as fearless police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy in Mardaani 3, scheduled for release on February 27. The Mardaani series remains India’s only successful female-led action franchise, combining gripping storytelling with a strong social message.
