Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, a constituent of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), inaugurated the International Rover Challenge (IRC) 2026 and International Space Drone Challenge (ISDC) 2026 on 28 January at the MIT Quadrangle. Organised in collaboration with the Space Robotics Society (SPROS), the events brought together young innovators from across India and the world, celebrating scientific curiosity, technological innovation, and collaborative learning.
Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M. D. Venkatesh, VSM (Retd.), Vice Chancellor of MAHE, presided over the ceremony as Chief Guest. Highlighting the global participation, he noted that 33 international and national rover teams and 22 drone teams were present at Manipal. He praised the platform for translating theoretical knowledge into practical solutions and emphasised its role in fostering perseverance, confidence, and a spirit of innovation that contributes to technological progress, nation-building, and economic growth.
Cdr. (Dr.) Anil Rana, Director of MIT, welcomed the participants and highlighted the institute’s dedication to holistic, experiential learning. He pointed to the active engagement of students in 26 major project teams and over 70 technical and cultural clubs, alongside initiatives like the Himalayan cycling expedition, which foster resilience and adaptability in aspiring engineers.
MIT alumnus Mr Sagar Dhaka (EEE, Class of 2019), Founder of SPROS, was recognised for his visionary leadership and efforts to connect students with global opportunities in robotics and aerospace technologies. His involvement has been instrumental in promoting collaboration, innovation, and excellence among young technologists.
The inauguration set a vibrant and inspiring tone for the challenges, reinforcing MIT Manipal’s commitment to interdisciplinary innovation, technological excellence, and the development of future-ready engineers. The IRC and ISDC events provide a global stage for students to demonstrate their skills, exchange ideas, and push the boundaries of engineering and robotics.
