Mumbai: The upcoming film The Diary of Manipur has become the centre of controversy after a formal complaint was lodged against its director, Sanoj Mishra, at the DN Nagar Police Station in Mumbai. The complaint has brought renewed attention to the project, which has already generated curiosity due to its subject matter.
The written complaint was submitted by Chander Kala Singh, President (Women) of the Maharashtra State Global Christian Action Committee. According to the complaint, certain scenes and dialogues in the film and its teaser allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community. It further claims that parts of the content depict situations suggesting disrespect towards places of worship, disruption of religious gatherings, and elements that could create discord between communities.
The complaint specifically refers to provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, including Sections 295, 295A, 296, 298 and 153A. These sections deal with offences related to religious sentiments and actions that may promote enmity between different groups. Chander Kala Singh has demanded the immediate removal of the film’s teaser from YouTube, alleging that it contains material offensive to Christian beliefs.
Director Sanoj Mishra has strongly denied the allegations. Responding to the controversy, he described the complaint as an indirect attack by his detractors. He stated that he has full faith in the law of the country and is consulting his legal team. He added that a formal response would be issued soon after legal review.
Police officials have confirmed that they have received the complaint and that the matter is under examination. As of now, no further action has been publicly announced. The investigation process is expected to determine whether the content in question violates any legal provisions.
The controversy surrounding The Diary of Manipur has sparked discussion within sections of the film industry as well as among social and religious organisations. While some have called for restraint until the investigation is complete, others are closely monitoring developments. With legal scrutiny underway and public attention growing, the coming days are likely to be crucial in deciding the future course of the film’s release and promotional campaign.
