Veteran actress Deepika Chikhalia, who became a household name after playing ‘Sita’ in the iconic television series Ramayan, attended the grand muhurat ceremony of the upcoming web series Mahashmashan in Mumbai. The event witnessed the presence of the cast, creators and members of the OTT platform STAGE, which is backing the series as a STAGE Original.
During the event, Deepika Chikhalia extended her best wishes to the entire team and appreciated the unique concept of the series. She said that the title Mahashmashan itself creates curiosity and instantly draws attention. According to her, audiences today are looking for stories that are emotionally powerful and rooted in reality, and the series appears to promise exactly that.
The actress also praised STAGE for consistently promoting regional storytelling and creating meaningful content for Indian audiences. In recent years, the platform has gained popularity for focusing on stories connected to local culture, language and grassroots narratives.
Writer and producer Dheeraj Mishra revealed that Mahashmashan explores the world of cremation grounds and the emotional struggles faced by people who work around them. He explained that the series aims to highlight the unseen realities, pain and human emotions connected to such places, which are often ignored in mainstream storytelling.
The makers believe the subject offers a strong emotional and psychological layer while also reflecting social realities rarely discussed on screen. Unlike conventional crime thrillers or family dramas, Mahashmashan intends to focus on human experiences, fear, loneliness and survival through a deeply rooted Indian backdrop.
The web series will consist of 15 episodes and is expected to premiere in the last week of June. According to the team, the project has been developed as an original OTT production with a cinematic treatment and realistic storytelling style.
Producer Ishika Mishra and director Raja Randeep Giri shared that shooting for the series is scheduled to begin in Mumbai by the end of May. They expressed confidence that the story and performances would connect strongly with viewers looking for meaningful and unconventional content.
The series features actors Kunal Singh Rajput, Golu Tiwari, Prashant Rai, Pari Singh, Gaurav Upadhyay and Zeeshan Khan in important roles. The cast is expected to portray emotionally layered characters connected to the central theme of the series.
Members of the STAGE OTT team, including Amar Dubey and Dharmendra Singh, were also present during the launch ceremony.
With OTT audiences increasingly showing interest in darker and socially rooted stories, Mahashmashan enters the streaming space with a subject that combines emotional depth, mystery and realism. The presence of Deepika Chikhalia at the launch has also added nostalgic value and increased curiosity around the project among viewers familiar with her iconic television legacy.
