Filmmaker and producer Nivedita Basu has reflected on how the web series Tandoor became a defining milestone in her career, marking her return to direction during the COVID-19 lockdown. Despite the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, the project not only marked her OTT directorial debut but also reaffirmed her passion for storytelling under difficult circumstances.
Shot during one of the most uncertain phases of the pandemic, Tandoor was completed with a limited crew while adhering to strict health and safety protocols. The production demanded careful planning, flexibility and teamwork as the cast and crew navigated restrictions that affected every aspect of filmmaking. For Basu, successfully completing the series was an achievement that went beyond the finished product, symbolising resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
The series marked a fresh chapter in Basu’s professional journey. Having built a successful career in television, she returned to the director’s chair with Tandoor, embracing the rapidly growing OTT space. The project allowed her to reconnect with the creative process she had always been passionate about while exploring a new storytelling format that has gained significant popularity among audiences in recent years.
The success of Tandoor extended beyond its release, earning recognition at the Filmfare OTT Awards. The series received nominations in several major categories, including Best Series, Best Actor and Best Actress, highlighting its strong performances and engaging narrative. The nominations also acknowledged the dedication of the entire team, whose efforts made the project possible despite the logistical challenges posed by the pandemic.
For Basu, one of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the opportunity to collaborate with familiar faces and trusted colleagues. She reunited with actors Tanuj Virwani and Rashami Desai, both of whom brought depth and authenticity to their performances. At the same time, her collaboration with Chitra Vakil Sharma and Chandni Soni evolved into a meaningful creative partnership that contributed to the show’s overall vision.
Music also played a significant role in enhancing the emotional impact of the series. Basu believes that the soundtrack complemented the storytelling and helped strengthen the connection between the narrative and the audience, adding another dimension to the viewing experience.
Speaking about the project, Basu said that Tandoor represented much more than her OTT debut. According to her, it was a return to the craft she had trained for and always loved. Reflecting on the challenges of the lockdown, she said the period demonstrated that compelling stories are driven not by resources or convenience but by conviction, passion and dedication.
The filmmaker added that the experience reinforced her belief in the power of perseverance and creative collaboration. Working under extraordinary circumstances reminded everyone involved that commitment to a shared vision can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
As India’s OTT industry continues to evolve, Tandoor remains an important milestone in Basu’s career. Beyond its critical recognition, the series stands as an example of how determination, teamwork and belief in a story can lead to meaningful creative achievements, even during one of the most challenging periods faced by the entertainment industry.
