From 1 November 2025, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has brought in new rules for Aadhaar card updates. These changes are meant to make the system more secure, accurate, and easier to manage online. But what happens if you do not update your Aadhaar details? Many people are unaware that failing to do so could lead to real problems  from blocked services to delays in official verifications.

Why Updating Aadhaar is important

Aadhaar is linked to almost every major government and financial service in India. It is used for banking, mobile connections, government subsidies, and even tax filings. When your personal details such as name, address, or phone number change, and your Aadhaar is not updated, it creates mismatches in records.

These mismatches can cause verification failures, rejected applications, and delays in getting essential services. The UIDAI has therefore urged all Aadhaar holders to review and update their information to ensure smooth access to digital and physical services.

New rules from November 2025

Under the new rules, UIDAI has opened a simpler system for updating Aadhaar details online. People can now correct their name, address, mobile number, and date of birth through the official portal or app without visiting an Aadhaar centre.

However, the fee structure has changed. Earlier, many updates were free for a limited time, but from 1 November 2025, standard charges apply:

  • Demographic updates (like name, address, or date of birth): ₹50 per update
  • Biometric updates (like fingerprints, iris scan, or photograph): ₹100 per update

There is also a special provision for children’s Aadhaar, allowing free biometric updates at certain ages (5 and 15 years).

What If You Don’t Update?

Failing to update Aadhaar details may not result in immediate penalties, but it can cause major inconveniences:

  1. Banking and KYC issues:
Many banks and financial institutions use Aadhaar for Know Your Customer (KYC) verification. Outdated details can cause your KYC to fail, leading to blocked accounts or restricted access to online banking.
  2. PAN-Aadhaar linkage problems:
Linking Aadhaar with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is mandatory for income tax purposes. If your Aadhaar details are incorrect or not updated, the linkage may fail, which can result in your PAN becoming inoperative. This means you cannot file taxes, invest, or conduct financial transactions that require a valid PAN.
  3. Government subsidy disruptions:
Subsidies for LPG, pensions, and welfare schemes often depend on Aadhaar-linked verification. Errors in Aadhaar can stop these payments until corrections are made.
  4. Mobile and utility service delays:
Mobile operators and utility companies may suspend verification or reject new applications if Aadhaar-based details do not match your current records.
  5. Legal and identity risks:
Keeping outdated information can also create confusion in official documents, especially when Aadhaar is used as proof of identity or address.
How to stay compliant

To avoid these risks, UIDAI recommends that users verify their details every 10 years and make necessary corrections on time. Here is how you can do it safely:

  1. Visit the official UIDAI website or the myAadhaar portal.
  2. Log in using your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Review your information.
  4. Upload valid documents such as proof of address or identity if required.
  5. Pay the applicable update fee and submit your request.

For biometric updates, you still need to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre.

Avoid using unauthorised agents

The UIDAI has also warned people to avoid sharing Aadhaar numbers or documents with unauthorised agents or cyber cafés. Always use the official UIDAI website or the myAadhaar mobile app to update your information. Fraudulent websites or agents may misuse your personal data.

A step towards a more reliable system

These new rules are part of UIDAI’s effort to improve the accuracy of India’s digital identity system. By keeping your Aadhaar updated, you not only ensure uninterrupted access to essential services but also help maintain the integrity of the Aadhaar database.

Ignoring these updates might not lead to an immediate fine, but it could quietly cut you off from everyday conveniences  from online banking to government benefits. Staying compliant is simple, secure, and essential.

Keeping Aadhaar updated is no longer just optional, it is a practical necessity. From 1 November 2025, update your details through the UIDAI portal, avoid mismatches, and stay connected to every service that depends on your identity.
