In a startling incident, two South Korean KF-16 fighter jets accidentally dropped eight 500-pound MK-82 bombs on the village of Pocheon during a live-fire drill on March 6, 2025.

The Incident

The mishap occurred around 10 a.m. local time. The bombs were “abnormally discharged” due to a pilot’s error with coordinates, causing them to fall outside the designated live-firing area.

Casualties and Damage

At least 15 civilians were injured, with two reported in serious condition. The errant bombs caused significant damage to several houses and a church in the area.

Official Response

The South Korean Air Force expressed deep regret over the incident and has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause. They have also pledged to compensate the affected residents.

Suspension of Drills

In response to the accident, South Korean authorities have suspended all live-fire exercises until a thorough understanding of the incident is achieved. However, this suspension is not expected to impact the larger joint exercises between South Korea and the United States, scheduled from March 10 to 20.

Community Impact

The mayor of Pocheon has urged both the government and the military to implement measures to prevent future civilian harm. Images from the scene depict damaged homes and a church littered with debris, highlighting the severity of the incident.
