Travelling to South Africa has become easier for eligible Indian passport holders with the introduction of the country’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. The digital platform allows travellers to apply for travel authorisation entirely online, with applications expected to be processed within 24 to 48 hours, making the visa application process quicker and more convenient.
The newly launched ETA is designed for short-term tourism and work visits of up to 90 days. Unlike the traditional visa process, travellers no longer need a physical visa sticker, as the travel authorisation is digitally linked to their passport. The system also allows multiple entries during its validity period, making travel more flexible for eligible visitors.
The move is expected to benefit Indian travellers planning holidays to South Africa, a destination known for its wildlife safaris, scenic Garden Route, Cape Winelands and vibrant cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg. The initiative aims to reduce paperwork and simplify travel planning by shifting the entire application process online.
How to apply for the ETA
Travellers must first create an account on the official South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal. Applicants are required to upload a photograph of the passport they will use for travel, complete the online application form, submit the necessary documents, verify their identity using smartphone-based biometric authentication, pay the application fee and submit the form electronically.
Once the application is submitted, travellers can track its status online in real time, making the process more transparent and convenient.
Where is the ETA valid?
At present, the ETA is available for travellers arriving through O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Cape Town International Airport and Lanseria International Airport. South African authorities have stated that the facility will be expanded to additional ports of entry in the future.
The ETA serves as a pre-travel authorisation, while the final decision on entry will continue to be made by immigration officials upon arrival in South Africa.
Faster travel with improved security
South Africa said the introduction of the ETA is part of its efforts to modernise immigration services through digital technology. The platform uses secure biometric verification and automated processing to simplify immigration procedures while strengthening border security and improving the arrival experience for international travellers.
Commenting on the launch, Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head MEISEA, South African Tourism, said Indian travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that offer both memorable experiences and greater convenience. She said the new ETA system will make travel planning faster by reducing paperwork, allowing visitors to focus on exploring South Africa’s wildlife, landscapes, cultural heritage and cities.
To support the launch of the new system, South African Tourism has also introduced a dedicated digital campaign across its social media platforms to create awareness among travellers.
The introduction of the ETA comes at a time when outbound travel from India continues to grow, with more travellers looking for destinations that offer hassle-free travel experiences. Eligible travellers are advised to check their eligibility and complete the application through the official South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal well before their planned departure.
