If you usually travel by train and end up with a waiting list ticket, this update from Indian Railways is important for you. From 1 May 2025, passengers holding waiting list tickets will no longer be allowed to enter Sleeper or AC coaches. You will only be allowed to travel in general (unreserved) coaches. This move has been taken to ease crowding and improve comfort for passengers with confirmed tickets.
Whether you booked online or from a railway counter, if your ticket is still on the waiting list on the day of travel, you can’t board any reserved coach. Only those with confirmed tickets will be allowed in Sleeper or AC compartments. Those without confirmed reservations will need to use the general compartments, where no reservation is required.
What happens if someone violates this rule?
If you still try to enter a reserved coach with a waiting list ticket, you will be fined. The penalty is ₹250 in Sleeper class and ₹440 in AC class, plus the fare from your boarding station to the next stop. TTEs (Travelling Ticket Examiners) have been told to strictly enforce this rule. Passengers violating this new rule could also be made to get off the train at the next station.
Advance Reservation Period (ARP) also changed
Another change to note, the Advance Reservation Period has now been reduced from 120 days to 60 days. So, you can book train tickets only two months in advance from your travel date now.
OTP must for all online bookings
To tighten up online bookings and prevent misuse, IRCTC has made OTP verification compulsory for all e-tickets. That means when you book your train ticket online, you will get a one-time password (OTP) to confirm your identity before the booking is final.
Why these changes?
This entire update is aimed at making travel smoother and less crowded. Overcrowding in reserved compartments is a common issue and causes discomfort to travellers, especially during long journeys. By stopping waiting list passengers from entering reserved coaches, Indian Railways hopes to give confirmed ticket holders a better travel experience.
So, what should passengers do?
If you want to travel in Sleeper or AC classes, make sure your ticket is confirmed before the date of your journey. If it stays on the waiting list, you’ll need to either cancel or travel in a general coach, which does not need a reservation.
