In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the Mauni Amavasya stampede at Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj has led to the tragic loss of at least 30 lives, with many more injured. Our deepest condolences go out to the families affected by this calamity.

The aftermath has seen severe traffic congestion stretching from Prayagraj to Varanasi and Ayodhya, with long queues of vehicles reported at multiple points. Thousands of devotees are now compelled to walk several kilometres to reach the Sangam for the holy dip. Despite the tragedy, the pilgrimage continues, with officials estimating that over 30.07 crore people have participated so far.

In response to the incident, the government has banned VIP movement on Amrit Snan day to prevent further mishaps. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been closely monitoring security and fair arrangements over the past 48 hours, issuing continuous directives to ensure the safety of all attendees.

The Maha Kumbh area has been declared a no-vehicle zone, leading to significant mobility challenges. Amidst these difficulties, a group of compassionate volunteers from Prayagraj has stepped forward to assist. Led by local resident Ravi Verma, these individuals are offering free bike rides to elderly and disabled pilgrims, helping them reach the Sangam and return to vehicle stands. This selfless initiative has provided much-needed relief to many stranded devotees.

At the Phaphamau border, traffic remains at a standstill, with people stuck for hours. Police are attempting to manage vehicle movement, but congestion persists. Many devotees, unable to find transport, are walking long distances to reach their destinations.

The massive crowd at Kumbh has also led to several devotees getting separated from their families. Many relatives are seeking help at the Khoya Paya Centre, but some have reported inadequate assistance from authorities.

Following the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh bath, a surge of devotees is now heading to Varanasi. Due to overcrowding at Dashashwamedh Ghat, the organisers of Ganga Aarti have urged people to watch the ceremony online instead of attending in person, to prevent further incidents.

Authorities are being urged to:

  1. Keep dhabas open 24/7 to ensure food and water availability.
  2. Deploy medical staff on two-wheelers to assist those in remote areas.
  3. Ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for stranded vehicles.
  4. Allow medicine shops to operate round the clock.
  5. Distribute clothes and blankets to those in need.

As the Maha Kumbh 2025 continues, the resilience and unity of the devotees shine through, even in the face of adversity. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy.
