West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has come under severe criticism following her remarks on the gang rape of a 23-year-old MBBS student in Durgapur. Banerjee suggested that the incident occurred at 12:30 AM, questioning why the victim and her male classmate were outside the campus at that hour. Her comments implied that the private medical college should bear some responsibility for student safety. However, this timeline was directly contradicted by the victim’s father, who stated that the assault took place between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. He strongly criticised the Chief Minister’s remarks, calling them insensitive and accusing her of victim-blaming, shifting focus from the perpetrators to his daughter.
The victim, originally from Odisha, was attacked near her private medical college campus in Durgapur. The police complaint notes that she was accompanied by a male classmate when the assault occurred. According to her father, she had not ventured out after nightfall, and he has requested that she be safely transferred to a medical institution in Bhubaneswar for recovery and security. His statement has sparked widespread condemnation of Banerjee’s remarks, with many describing them as inappropriate for a political leader addressing such a sensitive case.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted strongly, accusing Banerjee of misrepresenting the facts and attempting to downplay the seriousness of the crime. The party described her comments as reflecting a regressive mindset and a lack of empathy toward victims of sexual assault. Political analysts noted that such statements by a sitting Chief Minister risk undermining public trust and diverting attention from the urgent need to address crimes against women.
In response to the backlash, Mamata Banerjee claimed that her words were “distorted” by the media, shifting responsibility for the controversy to news outlets. Meanwhile, authorities have acted swiftly: within 36 hours, Bengal Police arrested three suspects and detained another for questioning. Odisha officials expressed satisfaction with the investigation’s progress and assured that the trial would be conducted in a fast-track court with a prompt charge sheet filing.
