On October 11, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, a major initiative aimed at transforming agriculture in India. With an annual outlay of ₹24,000 crore over six years (2025–2031), the scheme targets 100 low-productivity agricultural districts across the country. The primary goal is to enhance agricultural productivity, promote crop diversification, improve irrigation facilities, and facilitate access to credit, thereby empowering farmers toward self-reliance.

Key objectives

  • Enhancing agricultural productivity: The scheme focuses on increasing crop yields through better farming practices and resource management.
  • Promoting crop diversification: Encouraging farmers to grow a variety of crops to reduce dependency on a single crop and improve soil health.
  • Improving irrigation facilities: Developing and upgrading irrigation infrastructure to ensure consistent water supply for crops.
  • Facilitating access to credit: Providing both short-term and long-term credit facilities to farmers to support their agricultural activities.
Implementation strategy

The scheme will be implemented over six years, from 2025 to 2031. Each of the selected 100 districts will receive tailored support based on their specific needs and challenges. District-level officers will oversee the implementation, ensuring that the objectives are met effectively. The progress will be monitored regularly, and districts will be ranked annually based on key performance indicators such as yield growth, credit uptake, and irrigation coverage.

Expected outcomes

  • Increased farmers’ income: By improving productivity and providing better market access, farmers are expected to see a rise in their income levels.
  • Sustainable agricultural practices: The focus on crop diversification and efficient resource use aims to promote environmentally sustainable farming.
  • Improved rural economy: Enhanced agricultural activities are likely to stimulate local economies, providing employment and supporting rural development.

The PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana represents a comprehensive effort by the government to address the challenges faced by farmers in underperforming districts. By focusing on key areas such as productivity, diversification, irrigation, and credit access, the scheme aims to empower farmers and pave the way for a self-reliant agricultural sector in India.
