Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US Vice President JD Vance on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, marking their first official dialogue amid shifting dynamics in Western support for Ukraine. The meeting comes as former US President Donald Trump reiterates his intent to mediate a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, adding new urgency to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
During the meeting, Zelensky and Vance discussed continued US military and financial support for Ukraine, with Zelensky stressing the need for clear security guarantees from Western allies. While Vance acknowledged Ukraine’s concerns, he refrained from making explicit commitments, citing the US administration’s ongoing assessment of its foreign policy priorities.
Zelensky expressed cautious optimism, stating, “This was our first meeting, but certainly not the last.” The Ukrainian leader emphasised the importance of sustained US engagement, particularly as Ukraine continues to push back against Russian advances.
The discussions occurred in the backdrop of Trump’s recent assertion that he could end the war within 24 hours if re-elected. Reports suggest that Trump privately conveyed his willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that he has provided Zelensky with a personal contact line for future discussions.
Zelensky has maintained that any talks with Russia must be aligned with a common plan involving both the US and Europe. “We are open to discussions, but only when Ukraine stands on strong diplomatic and military footing,” he said.
European allies remain divided over Trump’s potential involvement in peace talks, fearing that his approach could pressure Ukraine into a settlement that favours Moscow. Germany and France continue to support Ukraine’s territorial integrity, while other nations are weighing alternative diplomatic routes to de-escalate the conflict.
