India’s First Onboard ATM Launched on Panchavati Express
In a first for Indian Railways and possibly Asia, Central Railway has launched an ATM machine inside a moving train. The pilot installation was completed on the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express this week, giving passengers access to cash on the go.
The concept: ATM in transit
The ATM is located inside one of the coaches of the Panchavati Express, a superfast daily train that runs between Mumbai CSMT and Manmad in Maharashtra. This initiative was developed in partnership with the India One ATM network, known for deploying white-label ATMs in underserved areas.
The goal is to improve access to banking services for passengers in remote and semi-urban areas, especially those travelling long distances with limited access to ATMs.
First-of-its-kind pilot by central railway
Central Railway, one of India’s busiest zones, initiated this trial with hopes of expanding the project based on passenger feedback. The ATM operates using secure onboard internet and is fitted with anti-vandal and fireproof systems.
The machine allows cash withdrawal using all major debit cards and may eventually support balance checks and mini-statements. The initiative will be monitored over the coming months to assess feasibility for other long-distance routes.
Why this matters
With millions relying on trains daily, onboard ATMs could be a game-changer in improving financial inclusion and convenience.
While airports and stations have ATMs, the idea of offering access inside a moving train is unique and innovative. For regions with limited banking access, this could be a model for the future.
Why panchavati express?
The Panchavati Express was chosen because of its:
- High daily footfall
- Urban-rural passenger mix
- Strategic location covering both metro and tier-2 regions
This route was seen as ideal for testing the technical stability and real-world demand of the service.
What next?
If successful, the railway ministry and banking partners may consider:
- Installing ATMs in long-distance trains like Rajdhani and Duronto
- Providing digital recharge and UPI access on-screen
- Linking ATM use with rail travel perks or cashback
Passenger feedback will play a critical role in shaping future installations.
