A tragic helicopter crash near Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, claimed the lives of four tourists. The privately operated helicopter crashed into a hillside shortly after take-off, killing all passengers on board.
According to officials, the chopper lost control minutes after departing from a helipad near Uttarkashi. Eyewitnesses reported a loud explosion followed by thick smoke rising from the crash site. Rescue teams rushed to the scene but found no survivors.
“There were four people on board. All have died. Their identities are being verified,” an official stated. There were no additional crew members besides the pilot.
Initial reports suggest that weather conditions at the time were clear. The cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, but investigators are focusing on the possibility of technical failure or pilot error. Authorities have sealed the area and begun a detailed probe into the incident.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation to analyse flight data, maintenance records, and the wreckage. Aviation safety experts have expressed concern over the increasing number of such incidents in mountainous terrain.
The crash has triggered alarm among tour operators and raised questions about the safety of helicopter services in the region. Uttarkashi is a gateway to several pilgrimage routes and sees a surge in tourist traffic during the Char Dham Yatra season.
“This tragedy is a wake-up call. We need to improve safety measures for all aerial services in hilly regions,” said a tourism official.
The bodies of the victims have been sent for post-mortem, and their families are being informed.
More updates on the investigation and response from aviation authorities are awaited.
