Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated further as Pakistan’s military reported neutralizing 12 Indian drones across multiple locations, with one civilian killed and four Pakistani soldiers injured. The incident follows a series of aggressive exchanges, including Indian missile strikes on Pakistani territory, prompting fears of a broader conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Pakistan’s Military Response
Pakistan’s army spokesman, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, stated that the drones were part of “another act of aggression” by India, targeting various sites, including a military installation near Lahore. “Last night, India showed another act of aggression by sending drones to multiple locations,” Chaudhry said. He added that one drone “managed to engage in a military target near Lahore,” causing partial damage and injuries to four troops. The military claims the drones, identified as Israeli-made Harop models, were intercepted by Pakistan’s air defense systems, with debris being collected for investigation. Operations to counter further incursions are ongoing.
Civilian Casualties and Cross-Border Violence
The latest flare-up has intensified violence along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in disputed Kashmir. Indian authorities report that at least 13 civilians and one soldier have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir due to Pakistani shelling since May 7. In Poonch, a heavily affected area, 11 deaths have been attributed to Pakistani mortar fire. Witnesses described harrowing scenes, with Madasar Choudhary recounting how his sister saw two children killed by shrapnel in Poonch. “She screamed for them to get back inside, but shrapnel got to the children – and they eventually died,” he told AFP.
On the Pakistani side, at least 31 people, including women and children, were killed in India’s missile strikes on May 7, targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan denies these sites were terrorist camps, calling the strikes a “cowardly” attack on civilians. Videos from Poonch shared with Al Jazeera depict homes reduced to rubble, with residents lamenting the destruction. “Everything I built is in ruins,” one woman cried.
Diplomatic Efforts Amid Rising Tensions
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, currently in New Delhi for a preplanned economic meeting, reiterated calls for restraint. “We hope that India and Pakistan will prevent the escalation of tension in the region,” he said upon arrival, emphasizing the need for peace to foster regional economic cooperation. Araghchi’s remarks follow similar appeals from the UAE, EU, and UN, with leaders urging both nations to avoid further escalation.
Background and Ongoing Conflict
The current crisis stems from a militant attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists. India blames Pakistan for backing the attack, a claim Islamabad denies. In retaliation, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, striking nine alleged terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan claims it shot down five Indian fighter jets and multiple drones during the operation, though India has not confirmed these losses.
Heavy artillery fire continues along the LoC, with both sides reporting civilian casualties. Indian authorities have evacuated thousands from border areas, while Pakistan has closed its airspace to commercial flights and shut educational institutions in Punjab.
International Concern
World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, have called for de-escalation. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that “the world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan.” Analysts fear that missteps could lead to a broader conflict, given both nations’ nuclear capabilities.
As the situation remains fluid, the international community continues to monitor developments closely, urging dialogue to prevent further loss of life and regional instability.
