Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has named Anita Anand as the country’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, making her the first Hindu and one of the few Indian-origin leaders to hold this top diplomatic post.
This announcement came as Carney unveiled his new federal Cabinet, weeks after taking oath as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister.
From Oakville to Ottawa
Anand represents Oakville, Ontario in the Canadian Parliament. A lawyer and academic, she is known for her calm yet firm leadership style. Before this, she served as Minister of Public Services and Procurement and later as Minister of National Defence.
In both roles, she was praised for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic and her focus on defence procurement reforms.
Sworn in with the Gita
During the oath ceremony, Anand placed her hand on the Bhagavad Gita, underlining her Hindu faith and Indian roots. Her father hails from Tamil Nadu, and her mother is from Punjab. Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, she grew up embracing both Indian and Canadian values.
This symbolic gesture has drawn attention from communities across India and the diaspora.
A strategic shift
Anand’s appointment comes at a time when Canada is recalibrating its foreign policy. Tensions with India have simmered since last year, following Canadian allegations over the killing of a Khalistani separatist. With Anand’s Indian heritage, many speculate her role could help soften the tone or create a more nuanced approach.
However, her office has made no official statement regarding her strategy or agenda yet.
Replacing Mélanie Joly
Anand replaces Mélanie Joly, who has now been moved to Minister of Industry. Joly had served as Foreign Minister during key global crises, including the war in Ukraine and strained relations with China.
The transition signals a fresh approach to diplomacy, with Anand expected to bring her trademark discipline and clarity.
Known for results
Anand gained recognition during her tenure in Public Services, where she oversaw vaccine procurement and logistics during the pandemic. Her quick decision-making and transparency earned her trust within government circles.
She later became Canada’s second woman Defence Minister, managing military conduct reforms and overseeing large defence deals.
