Actor Abhishek Banerjee reveals he only joined Stolen after a fierce creative battle – and it changed everything.
Abhishek Banerjee, known for iconic roles in Stree, Paatal Lok, and Dream Girl 2, recently opened up about the turning points in his career and the fiery negotiations that shaped his latest film, Stolen. In an exclusive conversation with IMDb, Banerjee shared how he only agreed to join Stolen on the condition that his creative suggestions were accepted – a move that nearly cost him the role but ultimately elevated the project.
Not an Overnight Star
With nearly 20 years in the industry, Banerjee has slowly carved a space for himself. “It’s been a gradual process,” he said. “My characters became popular before people even knew my name.” From the hauntingly funny Jana in Stree to the intense Hathoda Tyagi in Paatal Lok, Banerjee’s performances gained cult status, especially online.
“I wasn’t an internet sensation until Paatal Lok. It brought followers, recognition, and showed me how streaming can change your game,” he explained. Even now, years after release, people continue discovering his work.
Struggles, Rejections, and Casting Breakthroughs
Before recognition, Banerjee took every gig he could get – from voiceovers to failed RJ auditions and small student films. “I just never stopped working. I wanted camera time, not stardom,” he said.
His transition into casting began during Dev.D, and he quickly found himself guiding major talents like Jaideep Ahlawat. “We auditioned Jaideep for a role in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. He didn’t get it, but the audition was unforgettable,” he recalled. “He has such stillness and power. Every actor should study him.”
The Fight Behind Stolen
Banerjee’s entry into Stolen was anything but easy. Initially drawn to its action-thriller format, he clashed with the creators over the script. “I told them I’d only do it if changes were made. It became a standoff,” he revealed. Producer Gaurav Dhingra even argued with Banerjee at a public event.
But the tension led to collaboration. “We went to Delhi, brainstormed, and brought in Shubham Vardhan, a brilliant writer. Every break we took turned into a creative session. That’s when I knew – this film will be different.”
Banerjee’s insistence on quality and his respect for storytelling ultimately reshaped the film. His journey from struggling actor to respected creative force shows that persistence and passion still matter in today’s industry.
