“Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” is a refreshing chapter in Gujarati and Hindi theatre. It deserves to be experienced by thoughtful audiences and those who value artistic quality
Gujarati theatre has never remained confined merely to entertainment. Over the years, it has consistently produced memorable works centred on society, culture, politics and human values. Yet amidst commercially driven and lighter themes, thought-provoking plays are rare. Rare are the productions that continue to occupy the audience’s mind long after they have left the theatre. “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” is one such extraordinary and experimental theatrical experience.
The play is not merely a retelling of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay’s life. It is a sincere and inspiring attempt to understand the soul of a nation called Bharat. At a time when politics often disappears into the dense fog of power, propaganda and personality worship, “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” places nation-centric thought, spirituality and national consciousness back at the centre. Producer Jash Veera, writer Prayag Dave, director Pritesh Sodha and actor Paresh Bhatt, who delivers a remarkable performance as Deendayal, have together created something that deserves to be experienced by every theatre lover.
Playwright Prayag Dave’s writing forms the true foundation of the production. His deep research into Deendayal Upadhyay’s life, philosophy and literature becomes visible in every scene and dialogue. Prayag does not merely present historical information; he makes a committed effort to bring the spirit of Deendayal’s ideas alive. Concepts such as Integral Humanism, Antyodaya, and the belief that “individual progress is impossible without national progress” are transformed into compelling theatre without sounding preachy. For this alone, Prayag deserves immense appreciation.
One of the play’s greatest strengths is that it never feels like political propaganda. It is a journey through ideas. At several moments, the audience feels they are not simply watching characters on stage, but witnessing an entire ideological era come alive before them.
Paresh Bhatt’s performance remains one of the production’s most powerful pillars. He brings dignity, serenity and inner radiance to the character of Deendayal. His performance is authentic and captivating enough to rank among the finest stage performances of the year. Often, biographical plays reduce actors to imitation. That is not the case here. Paresh transcends imitation and carries the character into an entirely different emotional world. In doing so, he gently takes the audience along with him, drawing them deeply into the play’s emotional and philosophical fabric. He has not merely adopted Deendayal’s physical appearance, but internalised the depth of his thought process.
In several scenes, Paresh Bhatt’s silence becomes more powerful than dialogue itself. The sincerity of patriotism and inner conflict visible in his eyes leaves a lasting impact. Gujarati theatre has produced many talented performers, and with this portrayal of Deendayal, Paresh firmly establishes his place among them.
And then comes director Pritesh Sodha — young, gifted and deeply skilled. No amount of praise feels sufficient for his work here. He shapes the play with remarkable balance. Despite the seriousness and relative unfamiliarity of the subject, he never allows the production to become inaccessible or burdensome. The pacing, lighting, music and stagecraft reflect immense care and theatrical maturity. That is precisely why “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” evolves into a truly distinct theatrical experience.
Gujarati theatre, often out of necessity, tends to lean towards commercially safe subjects. “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” is not a production created by simply following prevailing currents. It is a play driven by elevated ideas and artistic conviction. It is an admirable theatrical risk. Producer Jash Veera deserves recognition for introducing such a subject in his very first production. That decision reflects not only confidence, but also unwavering commitment towards theatre itself.
Creative director Mihir Trivedi’s coordination adds another layer of finesse to the production. His understanding of transitions, emotional movement and visual rhythm becomes evident throughout the play. Presenter Asif Patel’s experience provides the production with a strong organisational foundation and will help it reach audiences effectively.
The play’s significance also lies in its sincere attempt to interpret the true meaning of the word “Bharat.” Here, nationalism does not emerge as an aggressive slogan, but as a spiritual and cultural identity that quietly settles into the audience’s consciousness. “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” is a refreshing chapter in Gujarati and Hindi theatre. It deserves to be experienced by thoughtful audiences and those who value artistic quality. Through them, the play will continue to earn both recognition and wider appreciation. In this production, entertainment and introspection travel hand in hand, inviting audiences into an inner dialogue shaped by ideas and values. Even while entertaining, the play leaves viewers with a lingering question… When will you once again reflect upon the greatness of your own nation in the right perception?
In all, “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal” is a living ideology brought to the stage. It is a spiritual dialogue and a profound experience of national consciousness.
Most importantly, the play has been staged not in one, but two languages. That itself reflects the clarity and confidence its creators possess regarding both the work and its accessibility.
The next performance of “Bharatno Laadakvayo Deendayal”, as “Bharat Ka Laadla Deendayal” in Hindi, will be staged at the Royal Opera House, Mumbai, on Saturday, 06 June 2026 at 07:30 pm.
