From April 1, 2025, several important changes to GST rules will come into effect in India. These changes focus on improving compliance, tightening security, and streamlining tax processes for businesses.
Here’s a breakdown of the key updates:
Mandatory ISD registration for multi-branch businesses
Companies with multiple GST registrations under the same PAN must now register as an Input Service Distributor (ISD). This ensures better distribution of Input Tax Credit (ITC) across branches. Failing to register may lead to penalties and loss of tax benefits.
Stricter E-Invoicing rules
Businesses with an annual turnover of ₹10 crore or more must upload e-invoices within 30 days of issuance. This rule is aimed at reducing tax fraud and improving reporting accuracy. Late uploads could result in non-compliance penalties.
Multi-Factor authentication becomes mandatory
To boost security, GST login will now require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all taxpayers. This measure aims to prevent unauthorised access and safeguard sensitive data. Businesses should update their systems to meet the new requirements.
Biometric verification for promoters and directors
Promoters and directors will now need to undergo biometric verification at designated GST centres. This step is meant to ensure authenticity and prevent fraudulent registrations.
Sequential filing for GSTR-7 returns
Taxpayers filing GSTR-7 for Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) must follow sequential filing. Skipping months or filing returns out of order will not be allowed. This change aims to streamline reporting and prevent errors.
New E-Way bill validity rules
The validity of e-way bills will now expire 180 days from the invoice date, with a maximum extension of 360 days. This rule is designed to prevent misuse of outdated e-way bills for transporting goods.
What should businesses do?
To avoid penalties and disruptions, businesses should:
Register as an ISD if operating multiple GST numbers.
Ensure e-invoices are uploaded within 30 days of issuance.
Implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for GST portal logins.
Prepare for biometric verification if required.
File GSTR-7 returns in the correct order without skipping months.
Monitor e-way bill validity to avoid expired documents.
These GST changes aim to make tax compliance more transparent and efficient. Businesses must act quickly to update their processes and stay compliant.
