The Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched a nationwide campaign titled ‘Hamara Shauchalaya, Hamara Bhavishya’ under the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen to highlight the importance of clean and well maintained toilets in rural households. The initiative, rolled out on World Toilet Day 2025, aims to reinforce hygiene practices, improve toilet usage, and ensure long term sustainability of sanitation facilities across villages.
As part of the drive, households will be encouraged to adopt a simple five step cleaning routine to keep their toilets functional, safe, and hygienic. These steps include keeping the toilet area dry, ensuring proper ventilation, cleaning the pan regularly, maintaining the water source, and safely disposing of waste. The campaign also seeks to remind families that well maintained household toilets are essential for health, dignity, and a cleaner environment.
A special ‘Ghar Ka Chakkar’ awareness activity will be carried out by Swachhagrahis at the village level. They will visit homes, demonstrate the cleaning steps, and talk to families about the importance of regular maintenance. The initiative also emphasises the role of community support, behavioural change, and shared responsibility in achieving long term cleanliness goals.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation has urged all state governments to actively participate and promote the campaign through local activities, public meetings, and awareness drives. The emphasis will remain on continuous usage and upkeep of toilets built under Swachh Bharat Mission, ensuring that India’s rural sanitation gains are not only preserved but strengthened further.
Through ‘Hamara Shauchalaya, Hamara Bhavishya’, the government aims to move the rural sanitation effort from construction to care, cleanliness, and sustainability, reinforcing the message that a clean toilet today ensures a healthier tomorrow for every rural household.
