At the Asian Games, Jay Meena created history by becoming the first Indian soft tennis player to win a medal. The 24 year old athlete from Madhya Pradesh secured a bronze medal after reaching the men’s singles semi finals, a result that has placed his name among India’s sporting pioneers.
What makes Meena’s achievement special is not only the medal but also the path he travelled to reach it. Growing up in Dewas, he once dreamed of becoming a cricketer. His life changed when he came across soft tennis at Pioneer Public School. As a ball boy, he watched players compete and became curious about the sport. That curiosity soon turned into dedication.
By the age of 14, Meena was already representing India at the international level. Years of hard work followed. He won gold at the 2022 National Games in Gujarat and later became the national champion in men’s singles. Each victory added another chapter to a journey built on discipline and determination.
The Asian Games semi final against Japan’s Takuya Kurosaka tested that determination once again. Meena fell behind early and looked out of the contest. But instead of giving up, he fought back strongly, winning two games and keeping the match alive. Although he eventually lost, his comeback showed the fighting spirit that has defined his career.
Sometimes a medal is not the biggest victory. Sometimes the biggest victory is making an entire country notice a sport it had almost ignored.
This was not Meena’s first international success. He had already helped India win its first medal at the World Soft Tennis Championships in 2024. At the 2025 Asian Soft Tennis Championships, he became the first Indian to win a medal at the continental level. The Asian Games bronze now adds another historic milestone to his growing list of achievements.
