The Maharashtra government has approved major transport infrastructure projects worth ₹28,227 crore, including the much-awaited Metro 13 corridor connecting Mira-Bhayandar with Vasai-Virar and the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road.
The decisions were taken by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The projects aim to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and strengthen transportation networks across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune.
Metro 13 to link Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar
The ₹17,724.99 crore Metro 13 corridor will be developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The 25.03-km metro line will connect key areas including Mira Road, Vasai, Naigaon, Nalasopara, and Virar, covering parts of Thane and Palghar districts.
The corridor will have a combination of elevated and underground sections. Around 21.78 km will be elevated, while 3.25 km will run underground. The project will include 16 stations, with 13 elevated stations and three underground stations. A major feature of the project will be a 4.92-km integrated six-lane road and Metro bridge across Vasai Creek, connecting Panju Island. A Metro depot is also planned at Chikhal Dongri.
The new corridor will provide interchange facilities with suburban railway stations at Naigaon, Nalasopara, and Virar. A connection with Metro Line 9 is proposed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium, while bus connectivity will be available at all stations.
The state government expects Metro 13 to carry around 4.49 lakh passengers daily by 2031. The project is expected to reduce travel time by nearly 50% compared to road travel.
The corridor will require around 24.84 hectares of land and is targeted for completion within five years. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to complete land acquisition and approach road work within six months.
Pune Ring Road extension gets approval
Along with Metro 13, the committee also approved the revised cost of ₹10,502.36 crore for the eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road.
The 31.805-km stretch, which will be developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), will connect Sortapwadi on the Pune-Solapur road to Varve Budruk Shivare on the Pune-Satara road. The extension is part of the larger 168.981-km access-controlled Pune Ring Road project, which aims to divert interstate and intercity traffic away from Pune city.
The government stated that around 80% of the required land has already been acquired. The project is expected to be completed by June 2029. The road will have three lanes in each direction with a planned speed limit of 120 kmph. It will include one interchange, three major bridges, five minor bridges, 18 elevated sections or flyovers, and four tunnels.
With these approvals, Maharashtra is moving ahead with major infrastructure projects aimed at improving urban mobility, reducing congestion, and supporting the growing transport needs of Mumbai and Pune regions.
