Mumbai is known for its crowded streets, historic buildings and endless stories hidden within the city’s past. But beneath the busy roads and iconic landmarks lies a mystery that has fascinated many — the existence of secret tunnels beneath Mumbai.

For years, stories of underground passages connecting old forts, government buildings and heritage structures have been passed down through generations. Some believe these tunnels were used by British officials, soldiers and rulers for secret movements, while others consider them nothing more than urban legends.

One of the most famous tunnel stories is linked to the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Built during the British era, the grand railway station has several underground sections, including service passages and utility areas. However, there is no confirmed evidence of a secret escape tunnel connecting it to other parts of the city.

Another popular tale revolves around Raj Bhavan Mumbai, the official residence of the Maharashtra governor. During restoration work, an underground bunker with chambers and rooms was discovered in 2016. Built during the British period, the bunker contained storage rooms and passages believed to have been used for defence purposes during wartime.

The discovery added fuel to existing stories about hidden structures beneath Mumbai. However, not every underground structure is a secret tunnel. Many were built for practical reasons such as storing supplies, managing utilities or protecting important locations during emergencies.

Mumbai’s forts also contribute to these mysteries. Structures like Sion Fort and other colonial-era sites have inspired tales of underground routes used by soldiers. While some forts across India do have hidden passages, concrete evidence of extensive tunnel networks beneath Mumbai remains limited.

The city’s geography has also played a role in creating these stories. Before becoming the Mumbai we know today, the city was made up of seven islands. Over centuries, land reclamation, construction and urban expansion transformed the landscape, leaving behind layers of forgotten structures beneath modern buildings.

Historians believe that while Mumbai may not have a massive network of secret tunnels like those found in some ancient cities, the city does have several hidden spaces that reveal its past. Old water channels, military structures, bunkers and underground rooms continue to offer glimpses into Mumbai’s history.

The mystery of Mumbai’s underground world survives because the city itself is built on layers of stories. Every old building, fort and street may hold a forgotten chapter waiting to be discovered. So, are there secret tunnels beneath Mumbai? The answer is somewhere between fact and fiction. While some underground structures are real, many of the dramatic tunnel stories remain unproven legends.

But perhaps that is what makes Mumbai’s history fascinating, even after centuries, the city still has secrets waiting beneath its surface.
