The humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s North Darfur has reached catastrophic levels, with rising civilian deaths, mass displacement, and widespread sexual violence reported in and around El Fasher.
Between 20 and 24 April, at least 129 civilians were killed in El Fasher city, Um Kedada district, and the Abu Shouk camp for internally displaced people (IDPs). Since 10 April, the UN Human Rights Office has confirmed at least 481 civilian deaths in North Darfur—though the actual figure is believed to be much higher.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred between 11 and 13 April at Zamzam IDP camp, where 210 civilians, including nine medical workers, were reportedly killed. Civilians, including children, continue to die from starvation, dehydration, and lack of medical aid as they flee the violence or are held in detention by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
As the RSF intensifies its offensive, more than a hundred thousand civilians have been displaced—many of whom were already uprooted in previous conflicts. Most are now taking shelter in areas like Tawila and Dar es Salam under desperate conditions, with limited access to water, food, and healthcare.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed alarm at ethnically motivated attacks in Darfur, comparing them to the atrocities of 2023 in El Geneina and other areas.
“We are seeing a horrifying rise in sexual violence and deliberate attacks on humanitarian and medical staff,” said Türk. “Victims in these areas have almost no access to support systems. Even water sources are being targeted.”
There are reports of abductions and gang rapes in and around Zamzam IDP camp. Many victims remain unaccounted for, raising fears of more untold suffering inside conflict zones.
This conflict began over two years ago, with fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). In its third year, the war continues to spiral, with the humanitarian toll mounting by the day.
Türk called for an immediate end to the violence and urged both the RSF and SAF to respect international law. “Civilians must be allowed to leave safely and must be protected. This war must stop.”
