From the small town of Moga, Punjab to topping charts in the United States, filmmaker Param Gill has made waves with his bold indie comedy Bad President. The film, a sharp political satire, has captured international attention for its fearless storytelling and daring take on leadership.
Unlike mainstream studios that avoid political commentary, Gill took the risk to highlight corruption and absurdity in politics. Bad President tells the story of a corrupt businessman who unexpectedly rises to the highest office. While exaggerated for humour, the story feels uncomfortably close to real events, making audiences laugh while also reflecting on reality.
The journey of the film was not smooth. When it first released during Donald Trump’s first term, it faced political pushback, minimal promotion, and limited audience reach. As a result, the film initially went under the radar.
Years later, the film found new life. Following Trump’s return to the presidency, viewers rediscovered Bad President, seeing its satire as strikingly relevant. Without any new marketing, the film began trending across streaming platforms. What once felt provocative now felt urgent and timely.
Gill attributes the film’s success to honesty and realism. Styled like a Saturday Night Live-inspired satire, the screenplay uses real statements and public actions. “This was never about political sides,” Gill has said. “It was about showing the danger of putting a harmful role model in the spotlight.”
Gill’s personal story adds to his unique appeal. A practicing dentist in the United States, he often sang Bollywood songs while treating patients. Yet filmmaking was his true passion. His courage and determination allowed him to pursue independent filmmaking without compromise.
With Bad President 2 already in development, Param Gill’s journey highlights a shift in global cinema. Audiences are increasingly embracing independent films that are honest, daring, and fearless.
From Moga, Punjab, to international recognition, Gill’s story is a testament to creativity, conviction, and courage—showing that bold, independent voices can make a global impact.
