De De Pyaar De 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 hit, recently hit theatres, reuniting Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh while introducing R. Madhavan in a pivotal role. In an exclusive conversation with IMDb, Devgn and Madhavan discussed how their effortless rapport, improvisation, and mutual understanding enhanced their performances. They also reflected on the film’s exploration of generational differences and society’s evolving acceptance of modern relationships.
Speaking about their chemistry on screen, Devgn said, “Working with Maddy feels effortless. We’re more like friends. He’s a fabulous actor and that always helps. The rapport we share improves every scene because we understand each other—what he’ll do, what I’ll do—and it works beautifully.” Madhavan added, “Ajay sir brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the set. He gives you the freedom to explore your performance. There’s a scene where he doesn’t speak at all—it’s just Rakul and me in a dramatic conversation. Without a word, he delivers exactly what the moment needs through a simple gesture or silence. For me, that was like attending a masterclass.”
Reflecting on why the film resonates today, Madhavan said, “Earlier, these kinds of relationships were uncommon and often frowned upon. Today, society is more accepting, but as an older generation, it’s still difficult to adapt. For me, embracing the role of a modern father means redefining the rules I grew up with. I can’t replicate the same approach my parents had with me, so I have to find new ways to guide and impact my son positively. This film explores those challenges, and perhaps even offers a perspective if similar situations arise in your own family.”
Devgn noted, “Young people today believe they have the right to make their own choices. You can’t deny them that. While conflicts arise, there are different points of view, and both sides have valid reasons. That tension is what makes the story compelling.”
