Rekha Gupta, a seasoned leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is all set to take the oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on February 20, 2025. With decades of experience in student politics, municipal governance, and legislative affairs, her journey to the top post reflects perseverance, grassroots activism, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Haryana, Rekha Gupta’s early life was shaped by her family’s move to Delhi when she was just two years old. Her father, employed at the State Bank of India, provided a stable foundation for her upbringing in the capital. Education played a crucial role in shaping her ambitions, and she pursued higher studies at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, where she actively engaged in student politics. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from IMIRC College of Law, Bhaina, Ghaziabad, under Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, further cementing her academic credentials.

Her political journey began in 1992 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Within a few years, she made a mark, becoming Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1995-96 and later its President in 1996-97. During her tenure, she spearheaded initiatives such as the introduction of a ‘Common Admission Form’ for university applications, launched measures to combat sexual harassment on campus, and advocated for better public transport facilities for students—issues that had a lasting impact on student welfare.

Her rise within the BJP was swift. She formally joined the party in 2002 and was soon appointed Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Delhi. Recognized for her leadership skills, she was later promoted to National Secretary of BJYM, a post she held until 2005. Over the years, she served in several key roles, including General Secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha, National Vice-Chairperson of BJP Mahila Morcha, National In-charge of Uttar Pradesh Mahila Morcha, and a member of the BJP National Executive.
Her foray into electoral politics came in 2007 when she successfully contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections from the North Pitampura ward. As Chairperson of the Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee, she launched initiatives such as the ‘Sumedha Yojana’, aimed at supporting economically weaker female students in higher education. Her tenure in municipal governance saw significant reforms, including the improvement of public parks, libraries, and safety measures for women. Her growing influence led to her re-election in 2012, after which she became the Vice-Chairperson of the MCD Standing Committee, the corporation’s highest financial decision-making body. From 2012 to 2013, she also served as Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) Education Committee, contributing to various educational and infrastructural advancements.

Despite her success in municipal governance, her journey into Delhi Assembly elections faced challenges. In 2015, she contested from the Shalimar Bagh constituency but lost to AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 10,978 votes. Undeterred, she contested again in 2020 but was defeated by a narrower margin of 3,440 votes. However, her resilience remained unwavering. In 2022, she returned to municipal politics, winning the MCD elections from Shalimar Bagh ward, and was subsequently fielded as the BJP’s mayoral candidate for Delhi. Though she lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi, she remained an influential figure in city politics.

Her persistence bore fruit in 2025, when she contested the Delhi Assembly elections once more from Shalimar Bagh. This time, she secured a decisive victory against Bandana Kumari with a resounding margin of 29,595 votes. This victory not only marked a turning point in her political career but also paved the way for her appointment as the Chief Minister-designate of Delhi.

Throughout her political career, Rekha Gupta has remained a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, public safety, and urban development. Her efforts as a municipal leader led to significant improvements in public infrastructure, including the development of women-friendly spaces like ‘Sita Vatika’ in Pitampura, the installation of streetlights in slum areas, and the initiation of pension schemes for senior citizens and divorced women. She also launched personality development programs for first-time women councillors, fostering female leadership in politics.
As Delhi’s Chief Minister, her policy priorities include:
- Strengthening public infrastructure
- Enhancing safety for women and children
- Improving education and healthcare services
- Addressing the rising cost of living
- Advocating for better coordination between Delhi’s government and the Centre
Beyond politics, Rekha Gupta has been associated with the RSS for over 32 years, shaping her ideological and leadership foundations under the mentorship of RSS leader Prem Ji Goyal. Her personal life remains rooted in family values—she is married to Manish Gupta, a businessman, and they have two children. Their daughter is pursuing post-graduate studies in Australia, while their son is completing his engineering degree in Vellore, Tamil Nadu.
Her journey, from a young student activist to municipal leader and now Delhi’s Chief Minister, showcases her resilience and dedication to public service. As she prepares to take office, her leadership and policies will be keenly watched, shaping the future of the capital in the years to come.
