Sikkim’s Chief Minister has firmly rejected rumours surrounding the potential merger of Darjeeling with the state, labelling the idea as “impossible” and asserting that it will never happen. The statement comes in the wake of growing speculation about the issue, with some political analysts suggesting that the merger could be part of a hidden agenda.
In a clear dismissal of the claims, the Chief Minister emphasised Sikkim’s commitment to maintaining autonomy. He reinforced the state’s position on preserving its integrity, stressing that such talks were baseless and politically motivated.
The issue had gained attention following political discussions around regional autonomy and the future of Darjeeling’s governance. However, the Sikkim CM has made it clear that the focus should be on strengthening Sikkim’s self-governance rather than any unsubstantiated merger with Darjeeling.
In line with these remarks, prominent political figures have also weighed in, warning that speculations about such a merger are designed to destabilise the region’s political landscape. The Chief Minister’s remarks are expected to put an end to the ongoing discussions, urging political parties to focus on more pressing matters affecting the state.
