Rescue teams are racing against time at the Silkyara tunnel in Telangana. A collapse on Saturday, February 22, 2025, left several workers trapped. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army are leading the efforts.
The incident occurred during construction work at the under-construction Silkyara tunnel in the Khammam district. A sudden landslide caused the collapse, blocking the exit and trapping workers inside. At least nine workers were inside the tunnel when the disaster struck. Three managed to escape, while six remain trapped.
The rescue operation is complex. Heavy machinery, including excavators and drilling equipment, has been deployed. Teams are drilling through debris and trying to pump out water. The water level inside the tunnel has reached nearly 50 feet, adding to the risks. The trapped workers have been inside for over 48 hours, with their exact condition still unknown.
Officials are working to maintain oxygen supply to those trapped. The distance between rescuers and the trapped individuals is estimated to be around 150 metres. Rescuers are attempting to reach them through multiple entry points, but rising water levels and debris are hindering progress.
The NDRF is using high-tech equipment to locate survivors. Fibre-optic cameras, life detectors, and thermal imaging devices are being used. Authorities are coordinating with local officials to speed up the operation. The rescue mission is also facing challenges from loose soil and the risk of further collapses.
Families of the trapped workers are at the site, hoping for a miracle. Medical teams are on standby to provide immediate aid. Psychological support is also being offered to distressed family members.
Local authorities have imposed restrictions around the area. They are urging people to avoid the site and cooperate with rescue teams. The focus is on saving lives and ensuring safety at the site. Investigations into the cause of the collapse will begin once the rescue mission is complete.
The situation remains critical. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is monitoring the situation closely. He has directed officials to provide all possible support to the rescue teams. Central government agencies are also in touch with state officials, offering assistance if needed.
The rescue operation is likely to continue for several more hours. The priority is to reach the trapped workers safely and minimise any risks to rescue personnel. Authorities have promised transparency in the investigation and accountability if negligence is found.
