Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. The first 16-car prototype completed its trials on January 15, 2025. It covered a 540-kilometer stretch between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This success marks a major leap in providing faster and more comfortable overnight journeys.
Key Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Spacious and Comfortable Coaches
The train consists of 16 coaches, including AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier. It can accommodate up to 1,128 passengers.
Modern Passenger Amenities
Passengers can enjoy automatic doors, cushioned berths, and onboard Wi-Fi. The aircraft-like design ensures a quieter and smoother journey.
Enhanced Safety Features
The train includes crash buffers, deformation tubes, and a fire barrier wall. These features improve passenger safety during travel.
Production and Expansion Plans
After the successful trial, Indian Railways plans to manufacture nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets. Production will take place between April and December 2025.
To support this expansion, major orders for propulsion systems have been placed:
Medha Servo Drives will supply systems for 33 rakes.
Alstom will provide systems for 17 rakes.
Full-scale production of the 24-car sleeper train is expected to start in the 2026-27 fiscal year. This will further strengthen India’s railway technology.
Final Safety Approvals Before Launch
Before commercial operations begin, the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will assess the trial results. Then, the Commissioner of Railway Safety will conduct speed tests to ensure safety compliance.
A Step Towards Railway Modernization
This project aligns with Indian Railways’ broader modernization strategy. The government has allocated over $22 billion this fiscal year to enhance rail infrastructure. Faster, safer, and more comfortable train travel is now closer to reality.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a milestone in India’s journey toward efficient and passenger-friendly rail transportation.
