Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has announced plans for a 26 km elevated road connecting Thane to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will oversee the project, estimated to cost approximately ₹8,000 crore. Once completed, this road will reduce travel time between Thane and NMIA to just 45 minutes.
Proposed route details:
- Starting point: Patni Ground (Dhan Nirankari Chowk) in Thane.
- Path: Runs parallel to Thane-Belapur Road for 17 km up to Vashi.
- Final stretch: A 9 km double-decker elevated road from Vashi to NMIA.
The initial segment from Patni Ground to Vashi faces minimal environmental obstacles. However, the Vashi to NMIA stretch may encounter challenges due to mangroves and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas.
Current connectivity challenges: Presently, Thane lacks direct connectivity to NMIA. Existing routes, such as Thane-Belapur Road and Palm Beach Road, often experience heavy traffic congestion. The proposed elevated road aims to provide a faster and more efficient alternative for commuters traveling between Thane and NMIA.
Project status and future steps: CIDCO has appointed a financial advisor for the project. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be prepared soon. Once completed, the elevated road will significantly enhance connectivity between Thane and NMIA, benefiting daily commuters and boosting regional development.
Key takeaways:
- 26 km elevated road to connect Thane and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
- Estimated project cost: ₹8,000 crore.
- Expected to reduce travel time to 45 minutes.
- Route includes a double-decker elevated section from Vashi to NMIA.
This initiative reflects the Maharashtra government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and reducing travel time for commuters in the region.
