Los Angeles Protest Turns Violent After Trump Deploys National Guard
Tensions flared in Los Angeles as protests against immigration raids spiralled into violence. The situation intensified when US President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to intervene. Protesters clashed with law enforcement on Sunday, blocking key freeways and torching autonomous vehicles. In response, security forces deployed tear gas, rubber bullets, and flashbangs to disperse the crowds.
This crackdown follows a wave of unrest across the country, with demonstrators condemning the aggressive immigration policies and detentions. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes in downtown LA, as demonstrators refused to clear roads and engaged in running battles with police.
Historically, the deployment of the National Guard during domestic unrest evokes strong emotions. A similar move was seen in March 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent the Guard to manage the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march.
With the city still tense, questions are being raised about the balance between national security and civil liberties.
Mumbai Locals to Get Automatic Doors After Thane Tragedy
Following a tragic incident at Mumra station in Thane, the Railway Board has taken a major decision — automatic doors will be introduced in Mumbai local trains. This move comes after a passenger reportedly fell off a crowded train due to open doors, reigniting long-standing concerns over commuter safety.
The Central Railway confirmed in a statement that the fall occurred because of severe overcrowding, a common issue during peak hours in Mumbai’s suburban network. In response, authorities aim to begin retrofitting local trains with automatic door systems — similar to metro rail safety features — to prevent such accidents.
Railway officials stated that trials will start soon and future rakes will include this safety feature by default. Passenger groups have welcomed the move but also demanded better crowd management and frequency improvements.
This marks a significant shift in local train infrastructure, aiming to save lives and modernise one of India’s busiest rail networks.
Housefull 5 Scores Big Despite Negative Reviews, Nears ₹100 Cr Mark
Akshay Kumar’s ‘Housefull 5’ is proving to be a box office juggernaut. Released on 6 June, the comedy-thriller has defied negative reviews and controversies to post a stellar opening weekend. After earning over ₹87 crore in just three days, trade experts expect the film to cross the ₹100 crore mark by Monday, provided the momentum holds.
Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the film faced backlash for its crude humour and objectification of women. Despite this, audiences flocked to theatres over the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday collections both crossing ₹30 crore. This marks Akshay Kumar’s third-biggest opening weekend ever and the highest post-pandemic debut for him, surpassing Sooryavanshi.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh called the performance “excellent by all standards,” crediting the film’s franchise strength and fan base. The success reinforces the fact that the Housefull series remains critic-proof, powered by mass appeal and strong weekend footfall.
Telangana on Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Thunderstorms Till June 11
After a dry weekend, Hyderabad and Telangana are bracing for a wet spell as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues alerts for widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state. The forecast is valid till June 11, with yellow alerts in place for multiple districts, including Hyderabad.
The city may witness isolated showers, thunder, and squalls, especially during the evenings. Cloudy skies and reduced daytime temperatures—likely staying below 36°C—are expected to bring much-needed relief from the summer heat.
The IMD attributes this weather shift to a weakening trough from East Vidarbha to North Interior Karnataka, replaced by north-westerly winds at low levels. Fourteen districts have already been flagged for rainfall on June 9, with forecasts indicating light to moderate rain and thunderstorm activity over the next seven days.
Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and take precautions against lightning and strong winds.
Germany Tightens Citizenship & Family Visa Rules Amid Migration Concerns
Germany has rolled out tougher migration regulations, ending the fast-track citizenship route and restricting some family reunification visas. The move, approved by Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government on 28 May, aims to curb irregular migration and reduce pressure on the country’s integration systems.
One of the key changes is the removal of the 3-year naturalisation option for “well-integrated” migrants. Now, all applicants must complete a minimum of 5 years of legal residence, prove B1-level German proficiency, and show financial independence to qualify for citizenship.
Additionally, family visas for certain migrant categories have been temporarily frozen, especially in cases where the applicants rely on state support. The government claims the reforms are necessary to maintain public confidence in Germany’s migration policies and ensure smoother integration.
The new rules have sparked criticism from immigrant rights groups, who argue that these restrictions may make it harder for long-settled migrants to secure permanent status and reunite with their families.
RBI Rate Cut Triggers Lending Rate Reductions by Major Banks
In a bid to revive economic growth, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) slashed the repo rate by 50 basis points, bringing it down from 6.00% to 5.50%, during its monetary policy review on June 6, 2025. The central bank also reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR), aiming to infuse more liquidity into the system and encourage lending.
Following the announcement, Bank of Baroda lowered its benchmark lending rate—linked to the repo rate—by 50 basis points, offering immediate relief to borrowers. On the private sector side, HDFC Bank cut its MCLR (Marginal Cost of Funds-based Lending Rate) by 10 basis points across all loan tenures.
Public sector lenders like PNB, Indian Bank, and Bank of India also revised their home loan rates downward, signalling broad market participation. The move is expected to reduce EMI burdens for millions of home and retail loan customers across India.

SpaceX lit up skies on both U.S. coasts this weekend with two successful Falcon 9 rocket launches, reinforcing its dominance in the satellite launch industry. The twin missions were aimed at expanding SpaceX’s Starlink broadband network and fulfilling a commercial payload contract with SiriusXM.
In the early hours of Sunday, residents of Southern California were treated to a dazzling display as a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base, deploying 26 new Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. These satellites will enhance internet connectivity in remote and underserved areas worldwide.
Later, from Florida’s iconic Space Coast, another Falcon 9 carried a SiriusXM broadcasting satellite, further strengthening the company’s footprint in space-based services.
These back-to-back launches highlight SpaceX’s growing capacity for frequent, reliable missions. The company continues to revolutionise space transport, aiming for rapid reusability and global coverage through its expanding Starlink constellation.
World Brain Tumour Day: Healthy Lifestyle Key to Lowering Risk, Say Experts
World Brain Tumour Day, observed annually on 8 June, serves as a reminder of the growing impact of brain tumours globally. Medical experts stress that a balanced diet, regular exercise, and overall healthy living may help reduce the risk of developing brain tumours, alongside aiding early detection.
Doctors highlight that while not all brain tumours are preventable, maintaining good metabolic health and staying vigilant about unusual neurological symptoms can make a significant difference. Common signs include persistent headaches, vision changes, and sudden coordination problems—often mistaken for other issues.
In cities like Bengaluru, doctors are seeing a rise in reported cases, partly due to increased awareness and better diagnostics. Advances in imaging technology and treatment options like targeted therapy and minimally invasive surgery have also improved survival rates.
Health experts urge people to adopt brain-friendly lifestyles and go for routine check-ups, especially if there’s a family history or persistent symptoms.
