E-commerce platform Meesho has introduced “Vaani – Your Meesho Dost”, a Gen-AI powered conversational voice shopping assistant aimed at transforming how millions of Indians shop online. The feature is designed especially for users who are more comfortable with offline-style shopping experiences, particularly across tier 2 and smaller markets.
Shopping in physical stores has always been conversational. Customers describe what they want, ask questions, and compare options before making decisions. However, digital platforms have often relied on typing, filters, and structured searches, which can feel complex for many users. Vaani aims to bridge this gap by bringing a natural, voice-led interaction into online shopping.
With Vaani, users can simply speak in their own words, ask follow-up questions, and refine their preferences in real time. The assistant understands user intent, suggests relevant products, and provides helpful details such as reviews and specifications. It also guides users through key steps like selecting payment methods and confirming delivery details, making the overall shopping journey smoother.
The assistant is built on a robust AI architecture designed for large-scale, real-world usage. It uses edge computing for faster speech processing and reduced latency, ensuring a seamless experience. Additionally, a multi-agent framework allows it to handle complex, multi-step conversations efficiently. The system has been fine-tuned to understand regional language nuances, making it more accessible and context-aware for diverse Indian users.
According to Sanjeev Kumar, Co-Founder and CTO of Meesho, artificial intelligence has always been central to the company’s growth. With over 251 million annual transacting users, Meesho has developed deep insights into consumer behaviour. Vaani represents the next step in its journey, combining conversational AI with commerce intelligence to make shopping more intuitive and human-centric.
Early user response has been encouraging. Around 79 percent of users believe voice makes shopping simpler, while 94 percent find it intuitive. Notably, 62 percent already trust the assistant for completing transactions. Within the first month, over 1.5 million users have interacted with Vaani, with many returning frequently, indicating strong engagement.
The impact is also visible in performance metrics. Users engaging with Vaani have shown a 22 percent higher conversion rate, along with lower return and cancellation rates. This suggests that conversational commerce could play a key role in shaping the future of online shopping in India.
