Alkem Laboratories has announced the launch of its semaglutide injection in India, marking a significant step towards making advanced diabetes and weight management therapies more accessible. The company introduced the drug under three brand names: Semasize, Obesema, and Hepaglide.
Semaglutide is a once-weekly injectable therapy administered subcutaneously. It is widely used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic weight conditions, especially when combined with a proper diet and exercise routine. With this launch, Alkem aims to provide a cost-effective alternative in a market where such treatments have traditionally been expensive.
The company has priced its pre-filled disposable injection pen at ₹1,800 for a month’s supply, effectively bringing the weekly therapy cost down to ₹450. This pricing strategy is expected to reduce financial barriers for patients and improve access to long-term treatment.
In addition to the disposable option, Alkem is also offering a reusable injection pen designed for higher maintenance doses. This device allows patients to replace only the medication cartridge instead of purchasing a new pen each time. As a result, it can significantly reduce ongoing treatment costs and improve adherence among patients requiring prolonged therapy.
The launch follows approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), which authorised the manufacturing and marketing of semaglutide based on Phase 3 clinical trials conducted in India. The approval covers its use in treating type 2 diabetes and supporting chronic weight management.
Alkem emphasised that semaglutide is a prescription medication and should only be used under proper medical supervision. The company believes that its affordable pricing and patient-friendly delivery systems will enable healthcare professionals to prescribe this therapy to a broader segment of patients.
Speaking on the development, CEO Vikas Gupta highlighted the importance of translating medical innovation into real-world access. He stated that the company’s goal is to combine quality, affordability, and reach to improve overall healthcare outcomes in India.
With its strong distribution network and focus on affordability, Alkem’s latest launch could play a key role in expanding access to modern diabetes and weight management treatments across the country.
