Making History at SBI
In 2013, Bhattacharya became the first woman to chair SBI in its 210-year history. During her tenure (2013–2017), she led the successful merger of SBI’s associate banks, strengthening the organisation. She also launched YONO (You Only Need One), a digital platform that made banking accessible to millions.
Her initiatives extended beyond innovation. She introduced sabbatical leave for women employees, setting an example for the industry. “Leadership is not about managing for today; it’s about preparing for tomorrow,” she often said, reflecting her long-term vision.

Her awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award by Financial Express in the ‘Best Banker’ category and recognition for fostering high employee satisfaction at SBI. She also served on key committees like the Lokpal Search Committee and the Padma Awardees Selection Committee, showcasing her contribution beyond banking.
A New Chapter with Salesforce
After retiring from SBI, Bhattacharya joined Salesforce India in 2020 as its first chairperson and CEO. She focused on digital transformation and empowering teams to innovate.
“Innovation is not just about technology; it’s about people and processes coming together to create something transformative,” she said, highlighting her vision. She is also an independent director at Reliance Industries, serving on key committees.

Bhattacharya is equally passionate about social causes, particularly empowering persons with disabilities to foster inclusivity. Her interests in reading and travelling reflect her curiosity and love for learning, qualities that define her journey.
Early Life and Education
Born in Kolkata in 1956, Bhattacharya grew up in Bhilai, where her father worked at a steel plant. Initially aspiring to be a doctor, she later pursued English literature, earning a postgraduate degree from Jadavpur University. She is also an Associate Member of the Indian Institute of Bankers.
