Residents in Chandigarh were jolted awake early Thursday as air raid sirens blared across the city, signalling a possible aerial threat. Authorities urged people to remain indoors as a precaution, triggering concern across neighbourhoods.
Sirens Spark Early Morning Panic
At around 4:50 am, air raid sirens echoed in several parts of Chandigarh, prompting confusion and alarm. These sirens, typically reserved for emergencies, were followed by official advisories telling residents to stay inside and avoid unnecessary travel.
The cause of the alert was intelligence inputs warning of a possible aerial threat from Pakistan, prompting heightened security measures across the region.
High Alert at Airport and IAF Base
Chandigarh International Airport and the adjacent Indian Air Force base in Mohali were immediately placed on high alert. Additional security was deployed, and surveillance efforts were intensified.
Punjab and Haryana police coordinated with central agencies to ensure safety at critical infrastructure. Air defence systems were reviewed, and aerial monitoring was initiated by the IAF.
Civil Authorities Urge Caution
The city administration, through loudspeakers and public announcements, urged citizens not to panic. Text messages and media alerts reinforced the message to stay indoors and follow instructions.
Schools and public offices continued with normal operations after assessments indicated the threat had eased. The administration clarified that the sirens were not part of a scheduled drill, but a response to credible threat intelligence.
