Mumbai Traffic Police invites public suggestions on proposed diversions
Mumbai’s historic Elphinstone Road Overbridge (ROB), connecting key areas like Dadar, Parel, and Lower Parel, will be closed for all traffic from April 10. The closure is part of a two-year-long reconstruction project by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Western Railway.
The bridge, originally built in 1914, has been deemed structurally weak and unsuitable for modern traffic loads. Authorities have decided to dismantle the current structure and build a new one in its place. The project is expected to take 24 months, with completion likely by mid-2027.
Public Objections Invited
In light of this major change, the Mumbai Traffic Police has published proposed traffic diversion plans and is seeking public feedback. Citizens have been asked to email their suggestions or objections to dcptraffic.city@mahapolice.gov.in by April 9.
Diversion Routes Announced
Traffic is expected to be rerouted through the following roads:
- NM Joshi Marg
- Senapati Bapat Marg
- Tulsi Pipe Road
- Dr. E Moses Road
Heavy vehicles will face longer detours, while light vehicles may be directed through alternate internal lanes.
Major Traffic Impact Expected
The Elphinstone ROB is a crucial link used by over 10,000 vehicles daily, especially those commuting to and from commercial hubs like Worli, Lower Parel, and Bandra-Kurla Complex.
With the bridge out of service, residents and daily commuters fear extended travel times and increased pressure on surrounding roads.
Pedestrians and cyclists are also expected to be affected during the initial demolition phase.
Reconstruction Timeline
- Closure begins: April 10, 2025
- Demolition work starts: Mid-April
- Expected completion: By mid-2027
- Updates: To be issued by Mumbai Traffic Police and BMC
Officials say the new bridge will improve safety and ease congestion in the long term
