Nationwide campaign focuses on emergency preparedness and risk reduction
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is observing ‘Fire Safety Week’ across all healthcare facilities in India from 21st to 25th April 2025, in collaboration with States, Union Territories, and key Central Ministries.
At Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi, Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava led a nationwide pledge ceremony on ‘Fire Safety in Health Facilities’, encouraging public and private sector participation in improving safety standards across the country.
Over 3,000 Participants Join Pledge and Webinar
More than 3,000 participants from hospitals and health institutions joined the event online, which included a webinar focused on:
- Emergency evacuation and patient safety strategies
- Fire prevention in high-risk hospital zones
Senior ministry officials were present at the venue to take the pledge in person.
Key Emphasis: Culture of Fire Preparedness
Addressing the attendees, the Union Health Secretary highlighted:
- The critical need for fire and electrical safety audits
- Importance of mock drills for patient evacuation
- Need for training and awareness among healthcare workers
She urged health institutions to actively share best practices and promote a culture of safety.
Pan-India Activities: Mock Drills, Fire Audits, Poster Contests
Throughout the week, hospitals and medical colleges across India are conducting:
- Mock evacuation drills
- Fire and electrical audits
- Demonstrations on safety equipment
- Poster-making and quiz competitions
A detailed safety checklist has been shared with all States and UTs. The government has asked public and private hospitals to ensure compliance and take proactive steps for fire risk mitigation.

In collaboration with MyGov, the Ministry has also launched:

These tools aim to increase public engagement and awareness about fire prevention in medical facilities.
Private Sector Involvement Encouraged
The Ministry has also called upon the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and other organisations to involve their state and district branches. The goal is to ensure widespread participation from both government and private sectors.
Government’s Commitment to Safety
The Health Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensure the safety of patients, their attendants, and healthcare workers. It will continue issuing advisories, best practices, and updated guidelines to support fire safety and emergency preparedness in all health facilities.
