Big lift for Indian Navy aviation
India and France are set to seal a ₹63,000 crore deal for Rafale Marine fighter jets. This landmark agreement promises to enhance India’s naval air power significantly.
What the deal covers
The contract includes 26 Rafale M aircraft. Out of these, 22 will be single-seater fighters, while 4 will be twin-seater trainers.
These jets are tailor-made for operations from aircraft carriers like INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. The package also covers weapons, spares, training, and a complete engine maintenance setup in India.
Why Rafale M matters
Rafale M jets offer superior radar, missile systems, and combat performance. During trials, they proved better suited than US-made F/A-18 Super Hornets for India’s ski-jump deck carriers.
These jets are expected to replace India’s aging MiG-29K fleet and sharpen maritime strike capability.
What’s next
Once signed, deliveries are expected to begin within three years. Indian Navy pilots and engineers will also receive comprehensive training under the deal.
This move further deepens the strategic defence partnership between India and France, while boosting India’s naval readiness against regional challenges.
