The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates for major agricultural crops for the 2024-25 year. The data reveals record-breaking production in several key crops, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to bolster the agricultural sector.

According to the estimates, Kharif foodgrain production is projected at 1,663.91 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), while Rabi foodgrain production is estimated at 1,645.27 LMT. Notably, Kharif rice production is anticipated to reach a record 1,206.79 LMT, an increase of 74.20 LMT compared to the previous year’s 1,132.59 LMT. Rabi rice production is estimated at 157.58 LMT. Wheat production is also expected to hit a new high of 1,154.30 LMT, surpassing the previous year’s 1,132.92 LMT by 21.38 LMT.

The estimates indicate a significant rise in maize production, with Kharif maize projected at 248.11 LMT and Rabi maize at 124.38 LMT. Oilseeds have shown remarkable growth as well. Kharif groundnut production is expected to reach 104.26 LMT, an increase of 17.66 LMT from the previous year’s 86.60 LMT. Soybean production is estimated at a record 151.32 LMT, up by 20.70 LMT compared to last year’s 130.62 LMT. Rapeseed and mustard production is projected at 128.73 LMT.

Other crops have also performed well. Tur production is estimated at 35.11 LMT, gram at 115.35 LMT, and lentil at 18.17 LMT. Sugarcane production is projected at 4,350.79 LMT, while cotton is estimated at 294.25 lakh bales (each weighing 170 kg). Jute production is anticipated to be 83.08 lakh bales (each weighing 180 kg).

These estimates are based on data validated through various sources, including remote sensing and consultations with industry stakeholders. The Ministry emphasises that these figures may be subject to revision as more data becomes available.

The record production levels underscore the effectiveness of government initiatives aimed at supporting farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity. The Ministry remains committed to implementing schemes that provide assistance and incentives to farmers, ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of India’s agricultural sector.
