Mumbai is set to get its first new railway terminus in over three decades. The city’s western suburbs will soon see a major upgrade in rail connectivity with the construction of a new terminus at Jogeshwari.
Why Jogeshwari?
The existing stations like Bandra, Dadar, and Andheri are heavily saturated. Western Railway has identified Jogeshwari East as a strategic location to ease the load. The area is well-connected, with ample land available near the Oshiwara Depot.
What’s the Plan?
According to railway officials, the terminus will be built on WR land beside the metro car shed. The goal is to shift some long-distance trains that currently crowd Bandra Terminus and Dadar to Jogeshwari. This could lead to faster operations, better maintenance, and improved passenger experience.
What’s New for Passengers?
- A dedicated terminus building
- Platforms for long-distance trains
- Passenger amenities like ticket counters, waiting areas, and parking
- Seamless metro and road connectivity
The terminus will also reduce the travel burden on passengers from the western suburbs, saving time and easing congestion.
When will It happen?
Western Railway has confirmed that they are in the planning stage. A detailed project report (DPR) is underway. Once finalised, construction is expected to begin within a year.
What else is Being done?
This development is part of a larger effort to decentralise railway traffic in Mumbai. Apart from Jogeshwari, discussions are ongoing about additional facilities at Vasai and other suburban nodes.
Why It Matters:
Mumbai’s railway network is one of the busiest in the world. Any expansion like this is crucial for the city’s growing population and its daily influx of commuters. If executed as planned, Jogeshwari Terminus could change the face of rail travel in western Mumbai.
