In a significant moment for Indian cinema on the global stage, filmmaker Kumar Raj has been officially selected for the 10th edition of the Pambujan International Film Festival 2026 in the Philippines. The milestone event will be held on 20 and 21 February 2026 at the Pambujan Municipal Gymnatorium in Eastern Visayas.

The selection marks an important international recognition for Kumar Raj, whose women-centric storytelling and socially reflective cinema have earned him critical appreciation. For a festival rooted in inspiration and community transformation, his presence aligns naturally with its larger mission.

A Festival Driven by Purpose

Founded in 2009 under the banner Pelikula Para sa Publiko or Films for the Public, the festival began as a local cultural initiative. It evolved into the Pambujan Film Festival in 2012 and expanded internationally in 2021. Today, it is recognised as the first international film festival in Eastern Visayas.

The festival carries the motto “Mahibaro Mag-inop”, meaning Dare to Dream. Its programming focuses on films centred on Health, Wealth, and Spirituality. The objective goes beyond entertainment. The platform encourages storytelling that educates, empowers, and inspires communities.

Celebrating Women-Centric Storytelling

Kumar Raj is known for films that place women at the heart of change. His narratives explore resilience, dignity, and emotional strength. Rather than portraying women as passive characters, his cinema presents them as decision makers who shape their own futures.

Festival Director Noriel Jarito praised Kumar Raj’s work for its emotional depth and spiritual integrity. He confirmed that the selected films are also nominated in key award categories. Program Director and Screening Head Geraldo Jumawan described his storytelling as a bridge between cultures and a reflection of shared human experiences.

Cinema as Community Engagement

The Pambujan International Film Festival stands apart for its strong community focus. Hosted in a developing town in Eastern Philippines, the festival channels submission fees and screening proceeds into cultural and educational initiatives. It encourages young people to explore creative expression and view cinema as a tool for personal growth.

In this context, Kumar Raj’s participation carries symbolic weight. His films, layered with social awareness and emotional insight, resonate with the festival’s commitment to meaningful cinema.

As the 10th edition unfolds, Pambujan will once again bring together global filmmakers and local audiences. Kumar Raj’s selection underscores the power of storytelling to cross borders, honour women’s voices, and inspire communities to dream bigger.
